Final Cut Pro X Update Lets Video Editors Work From Home

The latest update for Final Cut Pro X (FCPX), Apple’s professional video-editing suite, added deep support for collaborative, online, and remote collaboration. It’s the perfect feature update for making TV and movies during a pandemic.

This lets editors and producers work from home without needing to upload and download huge video files over slow home internet connections. In short, FCPX lets TV and movie post-production teams collaborate from home, without compromising the finished product. And that means they can keep making our favorite TV shows even during lockdown.

Pandemic Problems

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, movie and TV production shut down, sometimes mid-shoot. At the same time, movie theaters either closed, or scaled down to run at reduced capacity. Back in June, New Zealand reopened cinemas after declaring itself COVID-free (prematurely, it turns out). Despite being safe, box office takings were down at just 17% of normal levels. People just aren’t going to the movies, and many may never go again.

Shooting a movie or TV show in COVID times requires all kinds of difficult distancing and other safety measures, but at least now editing the footage can be done remotely. With just a Mac, a half-decent internet connection, and the latest FCPX update, editors and producers can collaborate. Instead of having to shuffle huge files back and forth between computers in the same locale, smaller files can be used.

This principle isn’t new. Offline editing, as it is known, was a way to edit video copies of your film masters, then cut the film to match at the end. 

“To me it was more about making editing faster/smoother/less demanding,” videographer and editor Cam Bunton told Lifewire via Twitter.

How Final Cut Pro X's Update Works

FCPX’s new update uses flexible “proxy” files. These are essentially low-resolution stand-ins for the original video files—as low as 1/8 the size, says Apple. Later, when the final cut is assembled, the original, full-resolution files are swapped in. The model is very flexible, with Final Cut able to mix and match original and proxy clips, and integrate with third-party online tools like the Frame.io reviewing and approval service.

New Normal

The pandemic had us all scurrying to work from home, and for many it will prove to be the new normal. Our bosses have realized we don’t all goof off when we’re out of their sight, and we’re all enjoying the extra hours we used to waste commuting.

But can TV and movie production really make a permanent shift to remote working?

Earlier this year, movie and TV composer Fil Eisler was faced with creating an orchestral soundtrack for Empire. He’d scored the beginning of the season with a regular orchestra, but it was no longer possible to put all 35 of those musicians into a room together. Instead, he worked with technicians to have the musicians recorded at home, then patch together the parts into a whole score. 

“It is a huge challenge for the crew,” Eisler told Variety in an interview, “because it’s really three times the amount of work to prep, orchestrate, [and give] additional instructions on the orchestration.”

The example above applies to video editing, as well. It’s the kind of logistical problem the new tools in Final Cut Pro X are meant to solve. It gives editors the ability to keep production going, even in the midst of a crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic. (Of course, they’ll still need video to edit, but that’s a whole different article).

Proxies also mean editors can get away with using lower-powered computers. Not everyone has a high-powered editing machine in their home.

“[Proxies are] great when you’re editing on a lower-powered Mac that can’t handle higher res files,” says Smith, “so that you can edit quicker and then revert back to the full-res when exporting.”

Is this the future of movie and TV production? We won’t know until we’ve recovered from the pandemic, but at least we can still get the latest episodes of our favorite shows.

The Galaxy Tab A 2020 is a decent little tablet, but it’s a bit underwhelming compared to Samsung’s other offerings.

Samsung has long been considered a leader in mobile device innovation, so like most people, I was excited to hear about the release of the budget Galaxy Tab 2020. I was eager to see what this affordable little tablet offered in terms of design, features, and specs. After testing the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 2020 for almost a month, it wasn’t exactly what I expected. Here’s my full review of the 8.4-inch Tab A.

Design: Cheaper materials

The Galaxy Tab A is compact and lightweight, weighing only 10.6 ounces. You can easily hold it in one hand, as it measures only 7.95 inches tall and 4.93 wide. It doesn’t feel as sturdy as other Samsung tablets like the Tab S6 though. The back of the Tab A feels as though it’s made of a plastic-like material, instead of aluminum or glass-like other Samsung mobile devices. The back shows fingerprints too, badly.

On the plus side, the tablet has a headphone jack on top for connecting a pair of headphones or an external speaker. It has a USB-C connector on the bottom and a built-in SIM that you can attach to your preferred wireless provider (it’s compatible with the major providers). 

Display: Good, not great

The 8.4-inch display is reasonably clear, but it’s nothing special. It has a 1920 x 1200 WUXGA resolution and 16M color depth. Shows, movies, YouTube videos, and TikTok videos display nicely, but you can see a difference when you play it next to the Galaxy Tab S6 (which displays 2560 x 1600).

Text displays clearly when browsing the web or reading an email, but I did find myself angling the Tab A upward towards my face when out in direct sunlight. Tab A has an outdoor model, which improved the outdoor picture slightly. But, it still lacked some of the depth and contrast I see in other Samsung devices.

Performance: Samsung Exynos 7904

The Galaxy Tab 2020 has a 1.8 GHz Octa-Core processor, the Samsung Exynos 7904. It has 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of built-in storage. You can expand the storage to 512 MB though. This is not an ideal tablet for productivity, as it simply doesn’t have the processing speed. It lags sometimes when orientating between landscape and portrait mode, and it tends to be a little lethargic when it comes to managing multiple tasks simultaneously. The touch screen is slightly oversensitive too, and I found the tablet would frequently over-scroll past my desired target.

On PCMark Work 2.0, it scored a 5406, which is around 40% less than the Snapdragon 855 chip. On Geekbench 5, it received a single-core score of 272 and a multi-core score of 913.

Productivity: No S Pen allowed

The Galaxy Tab A is not compatible with any version of the S Pen. This was a huge disappointment, as a lot of users (myself included) enjoy having the option to use the S Pen, and previous versions of the Tab A were compatible with the stylus.

This is a tablet designed for communication, not productivity. It’s ideal for video calls, messaging, emailing, and social media. It’s also a good option as an on-the-go entertainment device for watching movies and shows or web surfing.

Audio: Not bad

Tab A 2020 has two speakers on the bottom portion of the tablet. It doesn’t appear to have special audio tuning or support for Dolby Atmos, but the audio sounds pretty good, and it’s one of the tablet’s more admirable features. When I’m watching a show, the sound is rich and immersive. Calls also sound clear, and I rarely have trouble hearing the other party. 

Network: Works with the major cellular providers

The Galaxy Tab A works on the 2.4 and 5GHz Wi-Fi bands. The fact that Tab A is such an affordable LTE tablet appears to be what sets it apart. It works on 3G and 4G networks, and it’ll work with the major carriers (Verizon, Sprint/T-Mobile, and AT&T). I tested the tablet on the Sprint/T-Mobile network in my home, which is about 15 miles outside of Raleigh, NC. In my home, I’m able to get about 10 Mbps (download) and 2 Mbps (upload), but the carrier I have is notoriously slow in my area.

When I hopped on Wi-Fi, speeds increased exponentially, and I was able to clock 123/39 Mbps. 

Camera: Better than I expected

The Tab A 2020 has a 5 MP front camera, and it takes decent selfies. I would not use this as my preferred camera though. The rear camera is 8 MP, and it doesn’t have a flash. It does have autofocus, a pro mode, and a few other features. It doesn’t compare to the camera you’d see on a modern flagship phone though. Video resolution maxes out at FHD on both the front and rear cameras. You can take photos and videos indoors or in the daytime in a pinch, but the nighttime camera quality is not very good.

Battery: Lasts a full day

The 5000 mAh battery lasts for up to 12 hours of video playtime. I went into settings and selected a number of battery-draining options to see how much battery time I could get out of the device. I turned the brightness to its max setting and turned the display timeout to 30 minutes, and I was able to get a full day of on and off to use out of Tab A. 

It has a fast-charging USB-C port, and it took three and a half hours to fully charge the battery (from about 10% full).

Software: Android 9, not Android 10 (yet)

The Galaxy Tab A runs on Android 9. It doesn’t yet have the software upgrade to Android 10, but that should come in the near future. 

Tab A has facial recognition, and you can also set a pattern to unlock your screen. It doesn’t have some of the other biometrics like an iris scanner though. 

Price: Affordable for an LTE tablet

The Samsung Galaxy Tab A sells for between $240 and $280, depending on which carrier you have. This is an affordable price point for an LTE tablet, and the low price point appears to be the tablet’s biggest benefit.

The Fire HD 8 Plus is another good option as a budget tablet, offering a 2 GHz quad-core processor, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB or 64 GB of storage, and a MicroSD slot that supports up to a TB of storage. It provides Alexa and a game mode for a better, distraction-free gaming experience. The camera on the Fire Tab isn’t great though, as the front and rear cameras are only 2 MP. The Fire Tab also doesn’t allow for a cellular connection. The Samsung Galaxy Tab A has some perks like a better front and rear camera, LTE connectivity, and biometrics, but you pay more for those additions. If you just want a basic tab for gaming, emailing, and watching shows on the couch, you’ll like the Fire Tab. If you want a tablet you can use on the go, you’ll like Tab A.

Design: Futuristic design powered by Alexa

The Fire TV Cube is a cute, futuristic-looking block that will stand out on your home console despite its 4-inch sides. On the outside, it’s virtually unchanged from the first-generation model. Across the top, there’s a blue LED bar that lights up whenever the Cube takes action. The sides of the cube have a glossy black finish that’s a fingerprint magnet. There’s volume and menu buttons on the top, as well, but we don’t foresee a lot of use for them considering that the Cube comes with a remote. In the back, there’s an HDMI connector, a power adapter port, and a micro USB port.

In order to give users flexibility in how they set up their streaming system, Amazon’s built-in eight directional microphones into the Fire TV Cube, and another into the remote. As long as the Cube is at least a foot away from any audio output sources (i.e. speakers), it should have no problem hearing your voice commands from ten or more feet away. 

The Cube’s voice commands are probably its most distinguishing feature. Unlike the Fire TV Sticks, the Fire TV Cube also functions as an Alexa speaker, meaning it will respond to any voice commands, and more importantly, it has the same capabilities as an Amazon Echo. In other words, it can control your Internet of Things devices, such as smart bulbs, thermostats, and Ring doorbells.

You will also receive an Alexa-enabled remote with your Cube. It has buttons to navigate the UI, but it also has volume and power buttons that will work with your TV. It’s small, about the size of your palm, and it has a matte black finish that will make it easy to grip. The relatively large buttons make it simple to navigate the Cube without looking at the remote, as well.

How to Find and Play Netflix 4K Content

Being able to stream 4K content from Netflix does not mean that all of Netflix is in 4K. Moreover, Netflix does not always announce when new 4K content arrives, and titles are rotated in and out each month. For a listing of most 4K titles, check out the 4K Titles On Netflix Page from HD Report.

The best way to find out if new 4K titles have been added recently is to simply log in to your Netflix account on your Smart 4K Ultra HD TV and scroll down the 4K Ultra HD content line or select 4K in the category menu.

Once you find the titles available in 4K, you can just click Play and watch. Remember, you must have the proper subscription discussed previously to play 4K selections.

If the 4K content line or category listing does not show up on your Netflix account page, you may also be able to find 4K titles by typing "4K" or "UHD" into the Netflix search page.

If Netflix detects the proper TV, subscription type, and internet speed, the content will play in 4K as advertised. However, if one or more of those requirements are not met, Netflix will automatically adjust the streaming quality (resolution) accordingly.

You can find out if your TV is getting the 4K stream by accessing your TV's info or status menu (different for each TV brand—consult user guide it needed). The info/status feature should display the resolution of the incoming video signal. If it says 4K, UHD, 3840x2160, or 2160p, you are good. However, if it turns out that your status information indicates 1080p (1920x1080) or lower resolution, you are not accessing the 4K streaming version of your selected content.

If you are receiving 4K Netflix via a compatible external media streamer, and that streamer is connected to your home theater receiver en route to the TV and you are not getting a 4K stream - the home theater receiver could be the problem. To test this, disconnect the HDMI output of the media streamer from the Home Theater Receiver and connect it directly to the TV—if that solves the problem, then you found the workaround for the time being.

How to Watch Netflix on Ultra HD TV

OK, you are excited, you have a 4K Ultra HD TV and subscribe to Netflix, so you are almost ready. To watch Netflix in 4K, your TV (and you) have to meet several requirements.

Is your TV smart? Your 4K Ultra HD TV has to be a smart TV (able to connect to the internet.) Most are these days but you'll need to check if you have an older set.

You must have HEVC: In addition to being a smart TV, your TV also has to have a built-in HEVC decoder. This is what enables the TV to decode the Netflix 4K signal properly.

Your TV has to be HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 compliant: This isn't a specific requirement for Netflix streaming via the TV's internet streaming function, but 4K Ultra HD TVs with built-in HEVC decoders also include this HDMI/HDCP feature so that you will be able to connect to external 4K sources to the TV. These sources can be anything from Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc players or cable/satellite boxes to 4K-enabled media streamers, such as offerings from Roku and Amazon, that will provide real 4K content. Which TVs Are Compatible?

Unfortunately, not all 4K Ultra HD TVs have the proper HEVC decoder or are HDMI 2.0, or HDCP 2.2 compliant—especially sets that came out before 2014.

However, since that time there has been a steady stream of Ultra HD TVs that meet 4K streaming requirements from most brands, including LG, Samsung, Sony, TCL, Hisense, Vizio, and more.

Streaming on Netflix Requires a Subscription

In order to stream Netflix 4K content on specific Ultra HD TV models from each of these brands, the TV has to be a model that was released in 2014 or later and has the Netflix app installed, plus you must have a subscription plan that allows you to access Netflix's 4K content library.

Design: Does Netgear think they’re an aerospace firm?

When I reviewed the Netgear R7000P, I remarked that the angular design was more evocative of a stealth bomber than a traditional router. With the Nighthawk RAX80, Netgear leans even further into that general design ethos. The angular surfaces are gone, but the upswept antenna sheathes give the router the overall appearance of a graceful flying wing. 

The Nighthawk RAX80 might not actually fly, but it does look great on the desk or shelf. The overall shape does look a bit odd when wall-mounted, but it’s small enough that you shouldn’t be forced to mount it if you don’t want to.

The front of the unit is fitted with a breathable grill, with all of the buttons, LEDs, and ports located toward the rear. I did find it a bit difficult to see the LEDs during use due to the positioning. That’s unlikely to be an issue during normal use, but it could be a bit of an annoyance when trying to diagnose connectivity issues.

On the rear, the Nighthawk RAX80 features five Gigabit Ethernet ports, one port to connect to your modem, power button and jack, two USB 3.0 ports, and a switch that allows you to toggle the LEDs on or off.

Setup Process: Easy enough with a modem reboot

The Nighthawk RAX80 comes with the antenna wings folded in, so the first step in setting up the router is to fold them out and slot them in place. This is a lot faster than the general modem setup procedure that typically involves screwing each antenna onto the router individually, so the RAX80 definitely scores points there.

The only snag I ran into setting up the RAX80 was that it refused to function without a modem reboot. That’s an issue that I’ve run into before, so it isn’t totally unique, but it is a bit of an annoyance as some routers are more plug and play.

After the reboot, the setup process was quick and easy. You have your choice of setting it up with Netgear’s Nighthawk mobile app or via the web console. I chose to use the old familiar web console to run Netgear’s installation wizard, which ran me through the process of creating an admin password, downloading a firmware update, and setting up the wireless networks.

The wizard does leave advanced settings untouched, but I found the router to work quite well with most of the default settings left as is.

Connectivity: AX6000 dual-band with MU-MIMO

The Netgear Nighthawk RAX80 is an AX6000 dual-band router, which means it’s capable of providing up to 1.2Gbps on the 2.4GHz band and 4.8 Gbps on the 5GHz band. You’ll experience slower speeds with 802.11ac devices and will need 802.11ax devices to see the full benefit, but that’s true of any Wi-Fi 6 router.

Since this is a dual-band router, it has one 2.4GHz band and one 5GHz band, both of which are available at all times. Provide your wireless devices with login information for both, and they will automatically choose the best connection based on the signal strength wherever you are in your house.

This router also supports MU-MIMO with beamforming, allowing it to simultaneously stream to up to four devices simultaneously without anything needing to wait in line. If you have wireless devices that support MU-MIMO, and they’re all used at the same time, that’s a nice feature to have.

For physical connectivity, you get five Gigabit Ethernet ports that can be aggregated if your hardware supports it. That means you can aggregate two ports to enjoy multi-gig internet speeds and file transfer if your setup can take advantage of that.

Network Performance: Excellent performance that needs Wi-Fi 6 devices to shine

I tested the Netgear Nighthawk RAX80 on a 1Gbps Mediacom cable internet connection, checking both wired and wireless speeds. When connected via Ethernet, I measured a top download speed of 568Mbps, which was a bit slower than my Eero, which notched a top download speed of 627Mbps at the same time.

For wireless, I started out with a close proximity test on the 5GHz band, which yielded a top download speed of 423Mbps. Measured at 10 feet with a closed door in the way, that only dropped down to 420Mbps. At 50 feet, with a few walls and appliances in the way, the top speed I saw was 220Mbps. I also took my mobile device down into my garage, at a distance of about 100 feet, where it had trouble staying connected to the 5GHz network. Connected to the 2.4GHz network, I achieved a maximum download speed of 28.4Mbps.

When connected to a Wi-Fi 6 adapter in a close proximity test, I saw slightly better speeds: 480Mbps compared to 423Mbps with a Wi-Fi 5 adapter. During this same round of testing, the fastest wired speed I saw was 627Mbps from my Eero, and the fastest close range Wi-Fi speed I saw was 587Mbps from an Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 router.

Software: Barebones web interface and a mobile app

Netgear gives you the option to manage this router via a web portal or a smartphone app. Unlike other Netgear routers I’ve tested, the web portal doesn’t launch automatically with this one, so you aren’t pushed toward using it.

The web portal works well enough, but it is very barebones in terms of both presentation and options. I didn’t have trouble finding settings like quality of service (QoS) and everything was fairly intuitive, but I did notice a fairly glaring lack of parental controls.

Other Netgear routers I’ve tested, including significantly less expensive ones, came with built-in parental controls, and some models even include Circle with Disney built right in. The Nighthawk RAX80, despite its forward-thinking Wi-Fi 6 technology and premium price tag, has no parental controls at all, so keep that in mind if you have kids or teens in your house.

There is a basic firewall option, VPN integration, and DDoS protection, but there is no built-in malware protection. This is another area where Netgear dropped the ball, as I’ve tested less expensive Netgear routers that came with more advanced security options like the Bitdefender-powered Netgear Armor. You won’t get that here, so plan on finding your malware protection elsewhere on a per-device level.
