Most of us can remember the quaint recent history of content when gatekeepers had total control over articles, music, film, and video. The emergence of digital, files, and compression at the turn of the last century created a tear in the fabric of content control. Suddenly, everything was at risk.

We had free websites full of magazine content, Usenet and Binaries full of bizarre shareable clips (I think I got the first South Park clip this way), Napster and MP3s full of music, and palm-sized camcorders sucking pirated video off movie screens. It was a bonanza for the “content should be free” crowd and a disaster for pretty much everyone who created said content.

Laws, better DRM, broadband (and mobile broadband), and affordable access to vast libraries on content on services like Netflix, Spotify, and Pandora helped turn the tide and, miraculously, convince millions of consumers that paying for content is cool.

I haven’t thought much about Torrents or BitTorrent in years, wrongly assuming that our changing content consumption culture obviated the need to draw together millions of peer-to-peer connections for tiny bits of data that can be recompiled into a pirated versions of Gemini Man (as if you actually wanted to see that).

However, a look at some of Lifewire’s own analytics, which are often a fantastic mirror image of which tech questions people are asking on Google, reveals that Torrent technology is alive, well, and top-of-mind for hundreds of thousands of consumers. It’s no wonder that a quick search of Pirate Bay brings up all nine seasons of The Office and, yes, both seasons of The Crown.

Torrent Services like Pirate Bay and Torrent Downloads stand a chance of becoming Netflix’s evil twins. They’ll be the only place where Friends, The Office, and all the Star Wars movies live in harmony.

I guess, for some, that sounds awesome. It’s not.

Netflix Playback Speed Controls Anger Hollywood

Netflix Debuts Playback Feature

On Aug. 1, Netflix rolled out the feature. The company has considered the feature for years and announced a beta test in October 2019. Subscribers who want to test out the new feature will have to manually enable it with every title they pick. 

To use the feature on Android, open the Netflix app, then choose something to watch. When playback begins, tap the screen to bring up playback controls, tap the Speedometer, then choose your preferred playback speed.

For users accessing Netflix via the web, there are browser extensions such as Video Speed Controller available on Chrome and Firefox.

Hearing, Sight-Impaired Community Weighs In

Both the National Association of the Deaf and the National Federation of the Blind weighed in on the matter in emailed statements to Lifewire.

“For many years, content creators have opposed captioning on the dubious premise that it interfered with artistic vision,” said NAD CEO Howard Rosenblum. “This attitude persists today, unfortunately. The opposition to adjustable speed of viewing on a platform like Netflix does not make sense when one considers that many playback devices have for years had such features.”

Everette Bacon, a board member for the National Federation of the Blind (NFB), concurred.

"Many people aren't aware that individuals who are blind or who have low vision enjoy video like Netflix, and that many people in this community can understand and appreciate audio played at a much faster pace than what might be comfortable for most sighted people," said Bacon. 

Bacon said NFB sees value in allowing playback speed control for the blind or people who have other impairments because it makes content available to a wider audience.

We applaud Netflix for being a leader in accessibility and for working with us on this and also especially for providing audio descriptions for the blind for so many of its Netflix Originals.”

Netflix Addresses the Issue

Netflix, on its blog, addressed the Aug. 1 rollout.

“Following last year’s test, which was well received by our members, we’re rolling this feature out across Android mobile, and will start to test it on iOS and the Web. Playback Speed control enables members to choose from normal to slower (0.5X or 0.75X) or faster (1.25X and 1.5X) watch speeds on their phones, tablets, and laptops,” the company wrote.

Similar functionality has been available on DVD players and DVRs for years and its members have requested the feature. The company said testing revealed that consumers value the flexibility playback speed controls offer.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 is technically a 2-in-1, but it’s more of a productivity and drawing tablet. It includes the newest version of Samsung’s S Pen, and you can add on a keyboard case to transform the Tab S6 into a hybrid. I tested the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 for about a month, evaluating it to see how it compares to other modern tablets.

The Galaxy Tab S6 is remarkably slim, measuring only 0.22 inches in thickness, and weighs less than a pound, so it’s not too heavy to take with you on the go either. The interior bezel, which is roughly a quarter of an inch, uniformly bounds the perimeter of the screen, which is constructed of Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

The back of the tablet is aluminum, which is ideal for durability and day-to-day use. You can choose between three colors: mountain grey, rose blush, or cloud blue. I tested the mountain grey version. There’s an indenture on the back where you place the included S Pen. It connects to the tablet magnetically, and the tablet also charges the S Pen, which contains an internal battery. In spite of the magnets, the S Pen does come loose from the tablet relatively easily, so I found myself holding it against the tablet when I carried it with me. If you purchase the keyboard case, it includes a cover for the S Pen for a better, more secure placement. 

The Galaxy Tab S6 has a USB-C connector, but no 3.5 mm headphone jack. There’s a microSD card slot on the side to expand your storage to 512 MB, although this is becoming increasingly unnecessary as cloud storage applications become more commonplace.

Display: 10.5-inch Super AMOLED

You can usually rely on Samsung devices to have top-notch display quality, and the Tab S6 is no different. The super AMOLED display is crisp and clear. The text is sharp, and the colors are bright and vivid. The 10.5-inch display feels large enough to watch shows and movies or to use as a hybrid when you connect the keyboard case. 

The screen displays 2560x1600 resolution, with a pixel density of 287 pixels per inch. This is pretty close to on par with the 11-inch iPad Pro, which displays 2388x1668 resolution at 264 pixels per inch, and with the Surface Pro 7, which boasts 2736x1824 resolution at 267 pixels per inch.

Some users report an issue with the screen, where it randomly goes blank in the middle of using the Tab S6. Audio will still play, but the tablet’s screen will go dark, and the user will have to re-awaken the Tab S6 to continue their tasks. I personally experienced this issue while testing a refurbished version of the Tab S6.

Since mid-March all these shows had one or more hosts broadcast from home. I’ve done my share of Skype news interviews from my home office, but these broadcasts are different. Instead of pre-recording, chopped up, and neatly packaged interviews, the hosts were on live (often for hours at a time) and so were their remote guests.

I’ve done enough television to know that this is something new, different, and possibly very difficult. I wanted to understand how these shows are doing it, why they’ve made certain technology choices (why AirPods?) and why what they’re doing today probably wasn’t even possible a decade ago.

On March 20, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered everyone except essential workers to stay at home. Three days later, the show broadcast its first live-streamed show.

In a real-world case of “Stars, They’re Just Like Us,” show hosts Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest, along with Executive Producer Michael Gelman (and the rest of the show’s crew) started following stay at home guidelines while trying to figure out how to put on a show.

Big picture: Lenovo also introduced a pair of new gaming-friendly screens. There's the Y25-25 Gaming Monitor, 24.5-inch FHD IPS panel with 400 nits of brightness and 240Hz refresh rate and a Y27q monitor that lowers the refresh rate to 165Hz.

Hands on: Lenovo also introduced its first gaming mouse, the ambidextrous-friendly Legion M600 Wireless Gaming Mouse ($79.95, shipping this month), which charges via USB-C cable. They didn't specify how long a charge lasts, but told me that the mouse can recharge in 5 minutes for 10 hours of use. As for sensitivity, the M600 includes a 16000 dpi optical sensor. There are 9 buttons (some are programmable) and colored lights on the logo and in the scroll wheel. There's also a $29.99 Legion M300 gaming mouse option.

Bottom line: Lenovo, which has a rough 24% global PC market share says it's doing well on the gaming front, though it would not offer any specific numbers. Even so, systems and peripherals like these serve as a reminder that it's serious about attracting new PC gamers at all levels.
