The Mac mini (M1, 2020) is the first Mac desktop to receive Apple’s new ARM-based M1 chip. It’s also the most affordable way to dip your toe into the brave new world of Apple Silicon, even though it’s powered by the exact same chip found in the much more expensive MacBook Pro. It can’t run Windows apps via Bootcamp like an Intel Mac, and there will be some growing pains as developers switch gears and start catering to the new hardware, but that hardware offers tremendous raw performance, excellent potential in the long term, and more than acceptable real-world performance in the short term.

While I was a bit skeptical of Apple’s decision to leave Intel behind, the promised performance of their custom silicon left me eager to dig in and see how that raw power really translates into real-world situations. I was able to spend about a week with an M1 Mac mini as my main work machine, plugging in my keyboard and monitors, with my primary rig left to gather dust for the duration.

During my time with the M1 Mac mini, I paid close attention to performance, of course, with a special eye to how well it handles non-native apps and apps that were designed for iOS. The lack of support for Bootcamp meant I wasn’t able to completely leave my old hardware behind, but there’s no getting around it: this is some impressive hardware at any price, let alone a price tag that’s cheaper than the previous iteration of the hardware.

Design: Same sleek aluminum chassis

The big changes here are all under the hood, as Apple opted to leave the overall design of the Mac mini (M1, 2020) unchanged from the previous model. It’s still a block of milled aluminum with the same rounded corners, satin finish, and shiny Apple logo emblazoned on the top. The top is smooth and unmarked aside from the logo, and the front and sides of the case are completely featureless aside from a small LED on the front that lets you know when the system is powered on.

The ports are all found around the back, where the aluminum case is cut away to accommodate a black plastic panel. There you’ll find a power button and socket for the power cable, an Ethernet port, two USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports, an HDMI port, two USB type A ports, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Situated just below this array of inputs is a cutout that reveals the internal heatsink.

The biggest change here from the last iteration of the hardware is that the last Mac mini featured four Thunderbolt 3 ports instead of just two. The configuration of the ports is even the same, drawing attention to the fact that just two ports occupy space that could easily support twice that number.

The bottom of the M1 Mac mini also remains unchanged from the last version of the hardware, with most of it taken up by a circular plastic cover that’s designed to allow easier access to the internals. As before, it causes the Mac mini to stand up a bit from whatever surface you place it on, and it has very little gripping power. If you place it on a slick surface, be aware that it could slide off with the slightest nudge.

Unlike the previous model, the M1 Mac mini doesn’t have any user serviceable parts or components. That means you’re stuck with the memory and storage configurations you choose at check out, and you can’t go back in later to add extra RAM or a bigger SSD.

The biggest disappointment here, aside from the fact that the M1 Mac mini didn’t receive any sort of aesthetic update, is that Apple removed two Thunderbolt ports and the ability to upgrade your memory. The first isn’t that big of an issue, since the Mac mini looked great before and still looks great. The lack of Thunderbolt ports, similarly, isn’t a huge deal, because there are a ton of ways to get around such a limitation. The lack of upgradeability certainly removes a degree of flexibility from the hardware, though, making it much more important to select the amount of memory and storage that you’ll be comfortable with for the life of the device.

Setup Process: Fast and painless, but you can’t use a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse

If you’ve ever set up a macOS device before, the setup process isn’t any different here. It’s just a matter of accepting some terms, tweaking some initial settings, and connecting your Apple ID. As always, setup is going to be easier if you have access to another functional piece of Apple hardware that you’re already logged into.

The one wrinkle that you may run into is that you can’t set up the Mac mini with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. You’ll need to plug a wired keyboard and mouse in to complete the setup process and then pair your Bluetooth hardware, or use a keyboard and mouse combo that uses a wireless dongle.

For example, I was able to plug in the dongle from my Logitech K400+ Touch Keyboard, and the Mac mini recognized the peripheral immediately. That allowed me to complete the setup process without digging around for wired peripherals.

Performance: Unreal performance with some hiccups

While the Mac mini (M1, 2020) remained mostly unchanged from a design perspective, the internals received a massive overhaul. This is Apple’s first desktop to receive its new M1 chip, and that’s a really big deal. Though one of the M1’s headline features, reduced power use, isn’t as big a deal here as it is in the MacBook Air, this chip is still massively more powerful than anything you’ve ever seen in a Mac before. In fact, the Mac mini has the exact same chip as the MacBook Pro, with one more GPU core than the MacBook Air.

The M1 CPU features eight cores, including four performance cores and four efficiency cores, and the same chip also includes an eight core GPU.

This isn’t an Intel integrated graphics situation, though. The M1 boasts some pretty impressive processing power from both the CPU and GPU components. In real world terms, that translates to silky-smooth day to day operation from Big Sur, fast-loading and running apps, speedy video rendering and image editing, and intriguing possibilities in the realm of gaming.

While the numbers Apple has tossed around have been impressive, and my own experience with the M1 hardware was almost uniformly positive, I had to run some benchmarks. First up, I ran the Cinebench multi-core test. The Mac mini achieved a score of 7,662 in that test, putting it between an Intel Xeon E5-2697 at 3GHz and an X5650 Xeon processor at 3.66Ghz. That’s almost within spitting distance of an eight core AMD Ryzen 7 1700X, but only about half the score of a 1950X Threadripper.

For a processor in a mini-computer at this price range, the M1 turned in decent enough multi-core numbers. When running the single-core Cinebench test though, decent goes right out the window. In that test, the M1 Mac mini scored 1,521, which is the second highest score Cinebench has on record.

I also ran a few gaming benchmarks from GFXBench Metal. I started with Car Chase, which is a benchmark that simulates a 3D game with advanced shaders, lighting effects, and more. The M1 Mac mini scored a decent 60.44fps in that test, which would be entirely playable if we were dealing with a real game and not a benchmark. It scored a nearly identical 60fps in the less-intense T-Rex benchmark.

In addition to GFXBench, I also ran the WildLife benchmark from 3DMark that’s designed for iOS, made possible by Big Sur’s native support for iOS applications. In that test, the Mac mini scored 17,930 overall and registered 107fps. Both numbers were a bit higher than the MacBook Air managed on the same test, which is understandable since the Mac mini GPU has one more core.

Gaming: Limited but promising
This is one area where Apple’s decision to switch from Intel to their own bespoke silicon is unlikely to pay off for a while. The issue is that while the M1 chip is powerful, it’s going to take a while for game developers to offer any kind of real support for it. That means the already anemic Mac gaming scene could be even more anemic until devs see a reason to put substantial resources into games that run natively on the ARM-based M1 hardware. In the long term, cross-compatibility between macOS and iOS apps could end up being a massive game-changer.

Since the gaming scene was already anemic on macOS, a lot of gaming on Macs is really done in Windows via Bootcamp. If you do a lot of gaming on your current Mac, you’re probably familiar with big tentpole video game titles that never make it off Windows in the first place, and afterthought macOS ports that are poorly optimized and run a whole lot better if you just play the same game on the same hardware in Windows.

With the switch to ARM-based architecture, the Mac mini no longer provides the option to run Windows alongside macOS, so that gaming option is gone. Windows can’t run on this hardware, so the only way to play Windows-only games is through a virtual machine environment, which is not a good way to play games. That means you just won’t be able to play some games if you rely on a Mac mini, or any M1-based Mac, as your only gaming rig.

Curved TVs haven’t caught on in a big way, given that the vast majority of 4K HDR sets sold today are still flat. Still, curved-screen sets are out there if you want something a little different, or perhaps something that provides a supposedly more immersive viewing experience. These days, Samsung is really the only brand-name manufacturer still pumping out new curved sets in North America, with a range of sizes and prices available.

Samsung’s 55-inch RU7300 Curved 4K HDR Smart TV is on the lower end of that price scale, with an MSRP of $550, but seen on sale for less than $500. It’s a sharp-looking set, given the high-resolution 4K image, and the curved design is appealing—although it comes with the same set of limitations and complications as any curved TV screen.

Lacking brightness holds it back a bit, minimizing the effect of HDR, but this is still a pretty nice set for the price, assuming that you’re fixated on a curved screen. I tested Samsung’s RU7300 for more than 80 hours across streaming media, video games, movies, and more.

Design: An appealing arc

The Samsung 55-inch RU7300 has a bit more visual pop than your average large-screen 4K HDR set because it is physically popping out towards you on the right and left sides, unlike a standard flat television. It’s a subtle curve overall, but enough to be just noticeable—especially from the sides. That might make it an awkward fit for wall mounting, but it has a distinctive edge that’s unlike nearly every other TV you’ll find in stores.

Curves aside, Samsung went pretty minimal on the front of the set, with a black plastic frame that’s nearly uniform around the screen—but slightly thicker on the bottom, with a tiny Samsung logo sitting on a small metallic accent at the center. The two legs strike a wide stance on either end, and aren’t especially chunky.


Meanwhile, the back of the TV has a series of uneven ridged horizontal stripes that are attractive. You’ll find the array of ports here, split between two panels. There are three HDMI ports, two USB ports, an optical audio out, an Ethernet port, and hybrid component/AV cables for older devices. That should be plenty for your various devices, although some TVs around this price point pack in another HDMI port.

The included remote control is compact, but filled with all of the buttons you’ll need to navigate menus, tap in channel numbers, and reach your favorite streaming services. It has dedicated buttons for Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video right on the remote, plus there are four programmable, color-coded A-D buttons for favorite channels. The TV itself also has a small control nub underneath the Samsung logo, but it’s difficult to feel around for and use.

Low input lag means that games feel responsive, making this set well-suited for gaming.

Setup Process: Legs or wall

If you’re setting the Samsung RU7300 up on a stand or table, then you’ll need to install the legs. That is extremely straightforward: each is designated for a certain side and simply requires popping in and tightening a couple of screws. Meanwhile, if you opt for wall-mounting, you’ll need a standard VESA 200x200 mount—however, you may need longer screws. The screws on my existing wall mount (for a flat-screen TV) weren’t long enough, so I had to order specialized ones.

Initial software setup can take a few minutes, as you’ll be prompted to log into a Wi-Fi network if you don’t have an Ethernet cable plugged into an active connection, and you may have to download updates to Samsung’s built-in interface. It was a pretty quick process for me.


Image Quality: Crisp, but could be bolder

At 3840x2160 (4K Ultra HD) resolution, Samsung’s RU7300 has sharpness covered, delivering crisply detailed visuals across the board. Native 4K media looks fantastic, as expected, and lower-resolution media scales up pretty smoothly. And low input lag means that games feel responsive, making this set well-suited for gaming.

Samsung advertises HDR support here, but it doesn’t pack quite the same punch as on some other TVs in this price range. This curved set just doesn’t get immensely bright, so it’s difficult to see quite as much variance in the dynamic range. Watching Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in 4K, it’s still inherently vibrant due to the source material, but lacks the extra edge in dynamism and contrast, and even looks a bit dim at times. The image quality isn’t bad in any way, but it doesn’t hit quite the peaks that I’d expected.

As for the curved design, it’s difficult to really see the advantages beyond wanting something a bit different from the pack. Whether playing games or watching movies or TV shows, I didn’t feel like the picture was any more immersive due to the slight arc of the display. But the curved screen does bring some notable downsides, such as ambient light more clearly reflecting off of the curves, and viewing angles suffering at wider angles.

This streaming box packs a Tegra X1+ processor and Dolby Vision to bring GeForce Now and stellar 4K video to your living room almost instantaneously. 

Design: Aggressively functional 

Compared to the base Shield TV, the Shield TV Pro has more ports and a more aggressive design. The box is small and flat with some angular detailing and green highlights, making it a great centerpiece of a home theater console. If you’re not as privy to its gamer-aesthetic, then it’s small enough that it will fit in many nooks and crannies, measuring only 1.02 x 6.26 x 3.86 inches (HWD). 

On the back of the box, there’s two USB 3.0 ports and an Ethernet port for the fastest connection to your internet and to your peripherals. The non-Pro version lacks these ports, meaning that you’ll need a Bluetooth gaming controller if you plan to use GeForce Now with it.

The remote for both versions of Shield TV is the same: a small triangular stick that looks a bit like a Toblerone bar. Despite its odd shape, it’s rather comfortable in the hand and it has a good balance of features. It has buttons for the things you’d expect, like volume and playback, and it has a button for Netflix. The remote’s best feature is its backlighting, which activates automatically every time you pick up the remote.

Setup Process: Your standard Android TV setup

Setting up the Shield TV Pro is pretty standard. It runs on Android TV, so if you’ve ever owned another device in that family of streaming services, then you should have no trouble here. Once you’ve plugged your Shield TV into your output, you just have to power it on and follow the on-screen instructions.

After the basic setup of signing into Google, Netflix, and your other services, you can customize the home screen to show your favorite apps. Streaming Performance: Raw power and amazing features

It’s no secret that the Shield TV Pro has some of the best hardware in the streaming device space. Inside the little box, Nvidia’s managed to pack in a Tegra X1+ processor, 3GB RAM, and 16GB of storage. With this much power, the Shield TV Pro blazes past the Roku Ultra and the Amazon Fire TV Cube. Even the regular Shield TV packs more power than most users will ever need. 

The Tegra X1+ is specced to handle not just 4K video streaming, but also videogame streaming via GeForce Now. If you don’t plan to play games on the Shield TV, you may be better off with a cheaper streaming device. If you must have the fastest streaming device, know that the Shield TV has almost no buffer time for 4K HDR video or for gaming. Rewatching Amazon’s excellent series The Expanse in 4K was a delight, as was winding through the roads of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. 

If you have content you want to watch that isn’t in 4K, know that the Shield TV also has an amazing upscaler. Its AI can take 1080p content and turn it into a vibrant, 4K image that looks native. Meanwhile, if you do have access to 4K content, the Shield TV can take full advantage of it, thanks to its compatibility with Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision, and HDR 10. However, it does not support HDR10+, so if you have more of that content, you may want to take a closer look at Amazon’s Fire TV lineup.

The Shield TV Pro also has voice control via Google’s voice assistant, and it works as well as what you’ll find on any other Android device. For comparison, it works as well as Alexa at recognizing your commands. That said, there is also Alexa support for the Shield TV Pro, so use whichever you prefer.

Software: Unbiased and extensive content

On top of the Shield TV Pro’s blazing-fast performance, it also has a bevy of content that’s easy to access. Because it runs on Android TV, you have access to most of the major streaming platforms, YouTube, and the Google App Store. The most glaring omission in its library is Apple TV, which both Fire TV and Roku support. In return, Shield TV supports GeForce Now and Google Stadia, two major game streaming platforms.

We’ve already mentioned that Shield TV has Dolby Vision and amazing 4K upscaling. It’s the only major streaming device to support Dolby Vision, but it doesn’t support HDR10+, so make sure you can run Dolby Vision.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 is one of Android’s best entries into the tablet space. Prior to its release, the non-Apple tablet market has struggled with some identity crises: software issues, lack of adoption from developers, and somewhat unexciting hardware. 

The Galaxy Tab S7 (and its larger counterpart, the S7+) seems to have finally perfected the Android tablet problem, providing a truly premium competitor in the hardware space to the iPad Pro, as well as providing a few software tricks that might just make it a viable laptop replacement. I picked up the base-level unit in Mystic Silver, along with the Samsung-designed keyboard cover to see just how good of a premium tablet this is.

Design: Clean, simple, and premium

One of the most important barriers to cross for the premium tablet space is making your device look and feel as premium as something like an iPad Pro. The Galaxy Tab S7 is extremely well-designed, opting for a fully aluminum, unibody design with a large, glossy glass screen and very small bezels on the front. There’s no front button here, a volume rocker on the side, and a sleep/wake button that doubles as a fingerprint sensor. 

One design touch that is interesting is the shiny outside edge of the construction because rather than featuring a high-gloss texture, it sports a machined, brushed surface. This gives the sharp, squared-off edges an extra little design nod. I also really like how simple the official keyboard Book Cover looks, with a faux leather texture and an ultra-slim, magnet-attached profile.

Durability and Build Quality: Really nice attention to detail
When it comes to mobile tech, Samsung is one of the few brands that just inherently understands how to make devices that feel premium. That fact is present, in spades, on the Tab S7 and Tab S7+. The sturdy aluminum build with brushed, textured sides feels great in the hand, while the Gorilla Glass that covers the display should provide decent protection against scratches and slight dings. 

You won’t find any IP rating here, which is true of most tablets that aren’t billed as rugged devices. I also want to note that because the slate is about 0.25 inches thick, the slimness might yield even less durability if you’re just tossing it in your bag. For this reason, I strongly recommend a case of some sort. Though most of the Samsung cases are slim, they do feel like they’ll provide a decent amount of drop protection.







Display: Sharp and very bright
One of the biggest differences between the Tab S7 and the Tab S7+ (arguably the only difference of any consequence) is the display. Where the Tab S7+ sports a 12.4-inch screen, the S7 has a smaller 11-inch screen, making it the more portable device. However, the S7 doesn’t offer an AMOLED panel like the S7+, but instead goes for an LTPS TFT LCD. 

On the surface, this means that technically the Tab S7’s display is less premium. While it’s true that an AMOLED panel will give you much starker blacks and more vibrant colors, Samsung has done a really nice job with the LCD panel on the standard S7. With a resolution of 2560x1600, the pixel density is actually reasonably sharper than the iPad Pro, and thanks to 500 nits of brightness, this display looks every bit as vibrant and sharp as its bigger brother’s AMOLED screen. 

The screen sits at 16:10, making it feel very narrow when you hold it in portrait orientation, but feels very fitting when watching widescreen video like movies or TV shows. If you want the most premium screen you can get on a tablet, you’ll need to go with the Tab S7+, but this LCD panel is sharp, bright, vibrant, and accurate and will certainly feel plenty premium.








The other standout feature on this class of tablets is the presence of a 120Hz refresh rate. The latest iPad Pros feature this tech (they call it ProMotion) and both Tab S7s offer it. This functionality makes your videos run more smoothly, and it makes all the actions you take on your tablet feel much more seamless. That’s because the amount of times the screen samples (or refreshes) movements and inputs is much higher than an average smartphone. Even the latest iPhones go with a 60Hz refresh rate. When you combine this with the low latency of the redesigned S-Pen, you also get a super-smooth drawing and note-taking experience. 

Setup Process: Android-friendly, with some Samsung complications
If you’ve ever set up an Android device, these steps will be pretty familiar, especially if you already have a Google account to log into. There will be the option to “clone” another tablet or phone, allowing you to pre-download apps, import contacts, transfer photos, etc. If you opt to just start from scratch, you’ll be dropped right into the OS, free to download whatever you want, though you will have to manually log in.

In true flagship Android fashion, there’s a litany of options to make your experience more personalized. I recommend setting up the biometrics (the S7’s fingerprint sensor is on the side button, and the face recognition works nicely) and customizing your S-Pen features. I also recommend perusing the side menu options, because it’s here that you can set up some app favorites, including some multitasking pairs that allow you to automatically open sets of apps in split-screen mode.








Performance: Snappy without much slow-down
The Tab S7 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865+ processor—essentially the fastest mobile chip on the market outside of Apple’s proprietary Bionic series tablet chips. To be fair, in raw shootouts, the iPads’ A12X chip does do better on raw CPU scores. For instance, Geekbench puts the Tab S7 around 900 on single-core and over 2700 on multi-cores. These are respectable numbers, to be fair, but the iPad Pro routinely gets over 1,000 on the single-core score and more than double the S7’s number with multi-core. 

The story isn’t (and shouldn’t be) about benchmarks in a vacuum. It’s about how the tablet feels in everyday use. The Tab S7 is extraordinarily snappy during typical usage. Things like web browsing, YouTube, and general productivity tasks all feel every bit as fluid as you’d expect on a standard laptop or on an iPad Pro. This is thanks both to the top-tier Snapdragon processor and the 6GB of RAM that comes standard in the base version (though you can bump it up to 8GB with higher-spec models), but also the 120Hz display.

In a lot of ways the high-refresh display will smooth over the stutters you’re used to with slower screens. I’ll get into the graphics processing in the gaming section later, but the Adreno 650 seems perfectly capable of handling almost any pressure I tried to put on it. The unit I have comes with a 128GB capacity, but both the Tab S7s can be configured as high as 1TB. This feels a little superfluous because every Tab S7 also comes with a microSD card slot for storage expansion. 







The S-Pen: A clever tool at no extra cost
Most high-end tablets these days come with an expectation that you can use them for at least basic digital design work. That, in most cases, means using a stylus for sketching. The iPad Pro line does have excellent pen compatibility, but they require you to buy the Apple Pencil separately (which will cost you an extra $129). 

One of the biggest selling points of the Tab S7 is that it comes bundled with the S-Pen, and thanks to less than 9ms of latency from the pen and the 120Hz fluidity of the screen, it feels impressively responsive and smooth. The pen itself is larger than the counterpart that comes on the Galaxy Note series, but quite a bit smaller and lighter than the Apple Pencil. 

If you pressed me on it, I would say that I prefer the feel of Apple’s stylus because it is slightly thicker and slightly heavier. But, the extra Bluetooth functionality on the S-Pen (using it as a shutter remote for the camera or a way to play/pause music) makes it a more compelling productivity tool. I also like that it magnetically snaps on to the back to charge and is covered safely by the keyboard case rather than just precariously sitting on the side in your bag like on the iPad Pro. 








Cameras: Enough to tide you over
Cameras on a tablet have become the butt of a lot of jokes, and it is true that it looks silly holding up a giant tablet to take a selfie at a national park. In the case of the smaller Galaxy Tab S7, I actually think it’s less cumbersome to take pictures. Because it’s an 11-inch screen, it isn’t the largest tablet in the world, and because the aspect ratio is pretty narrow when holding in portrait mode, it actually feels less awkward to hold it out for some quick pictures. 

The rear cameras available are a 13MP standard wide-angle system alongside a 5MP ultrawide. They’re similar in quality to what you’ll find on past generations of Galaxy phones, and because Samsung’s photo software is included here, you’ll get bells and whistles like pro-level controls, Night Mode, and more. Samsung has gone with an 8MP wide-angle lens on the front which is actually really solid for video calls. And because it’s positioned on the top-middle bezel when the tablet is in landscape mode, it’s placed much better than on most tablets which end up on the side when you put them in landscape mode. 








Battery Life: Impressively reliable
If the AMOLED panel is the chief selling point on the Tab S7+, then the battery life is the standout feature on the standard Tab S7. That’s not by coincidence either because the Tab S7 uses LCD technology, and that LCD is much smaller, so the battery doesn’t have to work nearly as hard to keep your viewing experience great. This may seem odd because the 8,000mAh battery in the Tab S7 is smaller than the 10,000mAh offered on the Tab S7+. But because the LCD is so much more efficient, even at reasonable brightness levels, I was able to easily get the 15 hours of use out of the tablet that Samsung promises on its websites. 

The other thing to consider here is the fact that Samsung has included its Super Fast Charging functionality via the USB-C port. Though, because there isn’t a 45W charging brick in the box, you’ll have to provide your own to get those speeds. I was easily able to get a full recharge (from nearly zero) with just about 2 hours plugged in.
