How to Stream Netflix in 4K

The availability of 4K Ultra HD TVs has increased, but the availability of real 4K content to watch, although increasing, has lagged behind. In this guide, we show you how to locate and watch 4K content on Netflix, including which combinations of subscriptions, TVs, and internet services are compatible.

How to Find and Play Netflix 4K Content

Being able to stream 4K content from Netflix does not mean that all of Netflix is in 4K. Moreover, Netflix does not always announce when new 4K content arrives, and titles are rotated in and out each month. For a listing of most 4K titles, check out the 4K Titles On Netflix Page from HD Report.

The best way to find out if new 4K titles have been added recently is to simply log in to your Netflix account on your Smart 4K Ultra HD TV and scroll down the 4K Ultra HD content line or select 4K in the category menu.

Once you find the titles available in 4K, you can just click Play and watch. Remember, you must have the proper subscription discussed previously to play 4K selections.

If the 4K content line or category listing does not show up on your Netflix account page, you may also be able to find 4K titles by typing "4K" or "UHD" into the Netflix search page.

If Netflix detects the proper TV, subscription type, and internet speed, the content will play in 4K as advertised. However, if one or more of those requirements are not met, Netflix will automatically adjust the streaming quality (resolution) accordingly.

You can find out if your TV is getting the 4K stream by accessing your TV's info or status menu (different for each TV brand—consult user guide it needed). The info/status feature should display the resolution of the incoming video signal. If it says 4K, UHD, 3840x2160, or 2160p, you are good. However, if it turns out that your status information indicates 1080p (1920x1080) or lower resolution, you are not accessing the 4K streaming version of your selected content.

If you are receiving 4K Netflix via a compatible external media streamer, and that streamer is connected to your home theater receiver en route to the TV and you are not getting a 4K stream - the home theater receiver could be the problem. To test this, disconnect the HDMI output of the media streamer from the Home Theater Receiver and connect it directly to the TV—if that solves the problem, then you found the workaround for the time being.

If you are not receiving 4K content properly, and you think you fulfill all of the above requirements or you are not sure if you do, go to the Netflix Help Page for further assistance.

How to Watch Netflix on Ultra HD TV

OK, you are excited, you have a 4K Ultra HD TV and subscribe to Netflix, so you are almost ready. To watch Netflix in 4K, your TV (and you) have to meet several requirements.

Is your TV smart? Your 4K Ultra HD TV has to be a smart TV (able to connect to the internet.) Most are these days but you'll need to check if you have an older set.

You must have HEVC: In addition to being a smart TV, your TV also has to have a built-in HEVC decoder. This is what enables the TV to decode the Netflix 4K signal properly.

Your TV has to be HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 compliant: This isn't a specific requirement for Netflix streaming via the TV's internet streaming function, but 4K Ultra HD TVs with built-in HEVC decoders also include this HDMI/HDCP feature so that you will be able to connect to external 4K sources to the TV. These sources can be anything from Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc players or cable/satellite boxes to 4K-enabled media streamers, such as offerings from Roku and Amazon, that will provide real 4K content. Netflix offers a regularly updated list here.

Which TVs Are Compatible?

Unfortunately, not all 4K Ultra HD TVs have the proper HEVC decoder or are HDMI 2.0, or HDCP 2.2 compliant—especially sets that came out before 2014.

However, since that time there has been a steady stream of Ultra HD TVs that meet 4K streaming requirements from most brands, including LG, Samsung, Sony, TCL, Hisense, Vizio, and more.

Streaming on Netflix Requires a Subscription

In order to stream Netflix 4K content on specific Ultra HD TV models from each of these brands, the TV has to be a model that was released in 2014 or later and has the Netflix app installed, plus you must have a subscription plan that allows you to access Netflix's 4K content library.

Netgear Nighthawk RAX80 Router Review

Our editors independently research, test, and recommend the best products; you can learn more about our review process here. We may receive commissions on purchases made from our chosen links.

The Netgear Nighthawk RAX80 is a dual-band router that packs in Wi-Fi 6 technology, five gigabit LAN ports, link aggregation, and a beastly quad-core processor. The headliner here is Wi-Fi 6, also known as 802.11ax, which you may or may not even have in your home just yet. As the successor to Wi-Fi 5, 802.11ax promises fantastic speeds of up to 4.8 Gbps and less network congestion.

I recently slotted a Nighthawk RAX80 into my network to put it to the test, looking at everything from Wi-Fi 6 speeds to file transfer performance, and even how well it holds up to general use like streaming and gaming.

Design: Does Netgear think they’re an aerospace firm?

When I reviewed the Netgear R7000P, I remarked that the angular design was more evocative of a stealth bomber than a traditional router. With the Nighthawk RAX80, Netgear leans even further into that general design ethos. The angular surfaces are gone, but the upswept antenna sheathes give the router the overall appearance of a graceful flying wing.

The Nighthawk RAX80 might not actually fly, but it does look great on the desk or shelf. The overall shape does look a bit odd when wall-mounted, but it’s small enough that you shouldn’t be forced to mount it if you don’t want to.

The front of the unit is fitted with a breathable grill, with all of the buttons, LEDs, and ports located toward the rear. I did find it a bit difficult to see the LEDs during use due to the positioning. That’s unlikely to be an issue during normal use, but it could be a bit of an annoyance when trying to diagnose connectivity issues.

On the rear, the Nighthawk RAX80 features five Gigabit Ethernet ports, one port to connect to your modem, power button and jack, two USB 3.0 ports, and a switch that allows you to toggle the LEDs on or off.

Setup Process: Easy enough with a modem reboot

The Nighthawk RAX80 comes with the antenna wings folded in, so the first step in setting up the router is to fold them out and slot them in place. This is a lot faster than the general modem setup procedure that typically involves screwing each antenna onto the router individually, so the RAX80 definitely scores points there.

The only snag I ran into setting up the RAX80 was that it refused to function without a modem reboot. That’s an issue that I’ve run into before, so it isn’t totally unique, but it is a bit of an annoyance as some routers are more plug and play.

After the reboot, the setup process was quick and easy. You have your choice of setting it up with Netgear’s Nighthawk mobile app or via the web console. I chose to use the old familiar web console to run Netgear’s installation wizard, which ran me through the process of creating an admin password, downloading a firmware update, and setting up the wireless networks.

The wizard does leave advanced settings untouched, but I found the router to work quite well with most of the default settings left as is.

Connectivity: AX6000 dual-band with MU-MIMO

The Netgear Nighthawk RAX80 is an AX6000 dual-band router, which means it’s capable of providing up to 1.2Gbps on the 2.4GHz band and 4.8 Gbps on the 5GHz band. You’ll experience slower speeds with 802.11ac devices and will need 802.11ax devices to see the full benefit, but that’s true of any Wi-Fi 6 router.

Since this is a dual-band router, it has one 2.4GHz band and one 5GHz band, both of which are available at all times. Provide your wireless devices with login information for both, and they will automatically choose the best connection based on the signal strength wherever you are in your house.

This router also supports MU-MIMO with beamforming, allowing it to simultaneously stream to up to four devices simultaneously without anything needing to wait in line. If you have wireless devices that support MU-MIMO, and they’re all used at the same time, that’s a nice feature to have.

For physical connectivity, you get five Gigabit Ethernet ports that can be aggregated if your hardware supports it. That means you can aggregate two ports to enjoy multi-gig internet speeds and file transfer if your setup can take advantage of that.

Network Performance: Excellent performance that needs Wi-Fi 6 devices to shine

I tested the Netgear Nighthawk RAX80 on a 1Gbps Mediacom cable internet connection, checking both wired and wireless speeds. When connected via Ethernet, I measured a top download speed of 568Mbps, which was a bit slower than my Eero, which notched a top download speed of 627Mbps at the same time.

For wireless, I started out with a close proximity test on the 5GHz band, which yielded a top download speed of 423Mbps. Measured at 10 feet with a closed door in the way, that only dropped down to 420Mbps. At 50 feet, with a few walls and appliances in the way, the top speed I saw was 220Mbps. I also took my mobile device down into my garage, at a distance of about 100 feet, where it had trouble staying connected to the 5GHz network. Connected to the 2.4GHz network, I achieved a maximum download speed of 28.4Mbps.

When connected to a Wi-Fi 6 adapter in a close proximity test, I saw slightly better speeds: 480Mbps compared to 423Mbps with a Wi-Fi 5 adapter. During this same round of testing, the fastest wired speed I saw was 627Mbps from my Eero, and the fastest close range Wi-Fi speed I saw was 587Mbps from an Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 router.

Software: Barebones web interface and a mobile app

Netgear gives you the option to manage this router via a web portal or a smartphone app. Unlike other Netgear routers I’ve tested, the web portal doesn’t launch automatically with this one, so you aren’t pushed toward using it.

The web portal works well enough, but it is very barebones in terms of both presentation and options. I didn’t have trouble finding settings like quality of service (QoS) and everything was fairly intuitive, but I did notice a fairly glaring lack of parental controls.

Other Netgear routers I’ve tested, including significantly less expensive ones, came with built-in parental controls, and some models even include Circle with Disney built right in. The Nighthawk RAX80, despite its forward-thinking Wi-Fi 6 technology and premium price tag, has no parental controls at all, so keep that in mind if you have kids or teens in your house.

There is a basic firewall option, VPN integration, and DDoS protection, but there is no built-in malware protection. This is another area where Netgear dropped the ball, as I’ve tested less expensive Netgear routers that came with more advanced security options like the Bitdefender-powered Netgear Armor. You won’t get that here, so plan on finding your malware protection elsewhere on a per-device level.

Apple Mac Mini MGEM2LL/A (Refurbished) Review

Our editors independently research, test, and recommend the best products; you can learn more about our review process here. We may receive commissions on purchases made from our chosen links.

We purchased a refurbished Apple Mac Mini MGEM2LL/A so our expert reviewer could thoroughly test and assess it. Keep reading for our full product review.

A Mac Mini is an affordable option for those who want the cleanliness and simplicity of MacOS without dropping too much cash for a more expensive Apple computer or laptop. If you’re willing to sacrifice a bit of power and modernity, you can pick up a refurbished 2014 Mac Mini for around a quarter of the price of the 2018 version. In addition to its low entry price, the refurbished 2014 Mac Mini offers a number of benefits over other mini computers on the market. But, it also has its downsides. Should you buy the refurbished 2014 Mac Mini? I tested the refurbished Mac Mini MGEM2LL/A, and here’s my full review.

Design: Sleek and compact

The Mac Mini is extremely compact—small enough to sit on your desk without taking up too much space. It measures only 7.7 x 7.7 x 1.4 inches, with a low profile. Stylistically, it looks almost identical to previous models, and it also looks pretty similar to the 2018 Mac Mini. However, unlike the 2018 Mini, you can’t get the space grey finish on the 2014 version, as it only comes in silver.

The mini is attractive overall. With its square shape, rounded off corners, and Apple logo sitting front and center, it looks and feels high quality. On the bottom of the Mini, there’s a slightly raised circular stand. You cannot remove this stand, though, nor can you easily open up the mini to perform upgrades or maintenance.

All of the mini’s ports sit on the back, which makes it easy to connect your peripherals without having wires intruding on your workspace. You could also sit the Mac Mini on an entertainment center, connect it to a TV screen, and connect a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. The compact size provides a great deal of flexibility.

Although the Mac Mini is small, other mini PCs are smaller. Acer’s ChromeBox CX13 for example, measures 5.8 x 1.6 x 5.9 inches. The CX13 also includes a VESA mount, while the Mac Mini lacks VESA compatibility. You’d need to use a mount that grips around the outside of the Mac Mini if you wanted to attach it under a desk or to the back of a monitor or television screen.

Display: Intel HD Graphics 5000

The late 2014 Mac Mini has a single HDMI port and two Thunderbolt 2.0 ports for video. It uses the Intel HD Graphics 5000 as its integrated graphics card. In benchmark testing, it clocked 59.9 FPS on Car Chase, and 45.6 FPS on Manhattan, courtesy of GFXBench.

The GPU is powerful enough for you to play some less graphics-intensive games (like Dota 2), watch HD videos, and edit photos, but you can’t play more demanding games. You can display in 4K, but only at lower refresh rates (24 Hz over HDMI, 30 Hz over Thunderbolt). Because the Mac Mini has two Thunderbolt 2.0 ports in addition to an HDMI port, you can connect dual monitors by connecting one monitor via HDMI and one via Thunderbolt 2.0.

Performance: It does the job

The refurbished Mac Mini MGEM2LL/A is equipped with a dual-core processor, not a quad-core. It has the Intel Core i5-4260U, which has a core frequency of 1.4 gHZ. It has Intel’s turbo boost technology, and the boost frequency is 2.6 gHZ. The Mac Mini has 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM, and you cannot open up the mini and upgrade the RAM, which is a major downside. It comes with 500 GB of HDD storage.

Although this is a refurbished 2014 model, I put it through modern benchmark tests, including Cinebench R20 and Geekbench 5. On Cinebench 20, the CPU scored 571 points, which isn’t bad for an older chip, but it’s not indicative of a powerhouse either. Geekbench 5 gave the Mac Mini a single core score or 648, and a multi-core score of 1311. Acer’s ChromeBox CX13 (with Intel’s i3 - 8130U) scored higher, receiving a single core score of 861 and a multi-core score of 1616. The 2014 Mac Mini isn’t a workhorse by any means, but it has enough power to perform all of the essentials, and it can even serve as a reliable computer for school, work, entertainment, or all of the above.

Some applications are slow to open up, and system settings take a minute to load. But, the 2014 Mini has no problem running several tasks simultaneously, and the Mini never felt slow to any sort of frustrating degree.

The refurbished Mac Mini MGEM2LL/A is equipped with a dual-core processor, not a quad-core.

Productivity: A multipurpose PC

The refurbished Mac Mini doesn’t include any peripherals. In fact, the only thing that comes in the package aside from the Mac Mini itself is a power cord—you don’t even get a manual or quick start guide. You’ll need to provide your own mouse, keyboard, and screen if you want to use the mini as a desktop. But, you have a lot of options for how you want to use the device.

You can treat it like a desktop, use it as an entertainment hub or Plex server, create an arcade system, use it for smart home automation, or use it for a multitude of other purposes. It’s size, features, processing capabilities, and low entry price promote maximum versatility.

The Mac Mini is also energy efficient, requiring only a small amount of power consumption. It uses about six watts when idle, and its max consumption is 85 watts.

Audio: Built-in speakers

The Mini operates whisper quietly. Also, unlike many other desktop computers and mini PCs, it has its own built-in speakers. They don’t sound too bad, but they’re not very loud.

You can improve the sound quality by adding external speakers. It includes a 3.5 mm headphone jack as well as USB ports for connecting speakers. You could also connect Bluetooth speakers or take advantage of Apple’s AirPlay.

Network: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet

In addition to Bluetooth 4.0, the 2014 Mac Mini has 802.11ac wireless. It also has an Ethernet port for a hardwired internet connection.

One of the benefits to Apple devices is their seamless ability to connect to one another through a single Apple ID. The Mac Mini paired with my iPhone quickly and easily. I instantly received the texts and notifications I set up on the Mini without any hiccups.

Netflix Playback Speed Controls Anger Hollywood

Last fall, Netflix announced a test of its new playback speed control option, which allows consumers to speed up or slow down content when viewing on Android mobile devices.

The creative community in Hollywood clapped back hard. Director Judd Apatow took to Twitter to denounce the idea.

“No. That’s not how it works. Distributors don’t get to change the way the content is presented. Doing so is breaking a trust and won’t be tolerated by the people who provide it. Let the people who don’t care put it in their contracts that they don’t care. Most all do,” he tweeted last October.

Netflix Debuts Playback Feature

On Aug. 1, Netflix rolled out the feature. The company has considered the feature for years and announced a beta test in October 2019. Subscribers who want to test out the new feature will have to manually enable it with every title they pick.

To use the feature on Android, open the Netflix app, then choose something to watch. When playback begins, tap the screen to bring up playback controls, tap the Speedometer, then choose your preferred playback speed.

For users accessing Netflix via the web, there are browser extensions such as Video Speed Controller available on Chrome and Firefox.

“This is totally disrespectful to the casts, crews, writers and directors who provide your content @netflix. Please don’t do this,” Bradley Whitford tweeted the day before the feature's launch.

Kate Sanford, editor of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, tweeted her opposition of the feature, saying, “I am an editor who works very hard in collaboration with filmmakers to set the intended pace. I am 100% against this feature. The work should be judged as intended.”

Hearing, Sight-Impaired Community Weighs In

Both the National Association of the Deaf and the National Federation of the Blind weighed in on the matter in emailed statements to Lifewire.

“For many years, content creators have opposed captioning on the dubious premise that it interfered with artistic vision,” said NAD CEO Howard Rosenblum. “This attitude persists today, unfortunately. The opposition to adjustable speed of viewing on a platform like Netflix does not make sense when one considers that many playback devices have for years had such features.”

Everette Bacon, a board member for the National Federation of the Blind (NFB), concurred.

"Many people aren't aware that individuals who are blind or who have low vision enjoy video like Netflix, and that many people in this community can understand and appreciate audio played at a much faster pace than what might be comfortable for most sighted people," said Bacon.

Bacon said NFB sees value in allowing playback speed control for the blind or people who have other impairments because it makes content available to a wider audience.

“We applaud Netflix for being a leader in accessibility and for working with us on this and also especially for providing audio descriptions for the blind for so many of its Netflix Originals.”

YouTube, Hulu, and Amazon Prime already feature some playback speed controls.

Netflix Addresses the Issue

Netflix, on its blog, addressed the Aug. 1 rollout.

“Following last year’s test, which was well received by our members, we’re rolling this feature out across Android mobile, and will start to test it on iOS and the Web. Playback Speed control enables members to choose from normal to slower (0.5X or 0.75X) or faster (1.25X and 1.5X) watch speeds on their phones, tablets, and laptops,” the company wrote.

Similar functionality has been available on DVD players and DVRs for years and its members have requested the feature. The company said testing revealed that consumers value the flexibility playback speed controls offer.

We purchased the Samsung Chromebook 3 so our expert reviewer could thoroughly test and assess it. Keep reading for our full product review.

If you’re a dedicated Google user and you’d like a lightweight laptop rather than a tablet, the Samsung Chromebook 3 could be a great complement to your connected lifestyle. It doesn’t take up much room or overcomplicate the experience with too many extras. You just need a Google account and you’re good to enjoy the full suite of Google services and other media via USB, HDMI, and microSD. I used this laptop for a week of general media playback and browsing and enjoyed the straightforward, minimalist experience and impressive battery life.

Design: Small, sleek, and ready to move

The Samsung Chromebook 3 is a champ when it comes to portability. At just 2.54 pounds with a relatively slim build, it adds a little but not too much bulk. I still definitely noticed it when I stowed it in a tote bag or backpack, but it’s nothing compared to a laptop that’s over 3 pounds, which is a considerable amount of heft for daily commuting or travel.

At just 2.54 pounds, the Samsung Chromebook 3 is a champ when it comes to portability.

The screen hinge is quite sticky, but that’s preferable to feeling like it’s going to fall off—especially since the screen has the ability to recline completely back to reach a nearly 180-degree stance. The keyboard takes up much of the body of the laptop. The keys are large, raised, and curved, which is supposed to make the experience more comfortable. It did offer some ergonomic comfort in contrast to the touchpad area, but it’s a bit too small. Because it’s oriented so close to the edge of the device, I felt wrist strain even after just a few minutes of use. Touchpads aren’t known to be especially cozy for long-term operation, but I experienced more of an unnatural bend in my wrist than I’ve noticed with other laptop touchpads.

There’s a healthy number of ports on this small device. It was easy to extend the display using an HDMI cord and connect an external drive via one of the USB ports. There’s a microSD port as well for accessing media, but there’s no Type-C port.

Display: Clear and relatively crisp

The Chromebook 3’s 11.6-inch display is decent, though not out of this world. It features Intel HD Graphics 400 and anti-reflective properties—both of which were richer and more effective than what I noticed from the Lenovo Ideapad S130’s display. Content is somewhat visible and legible even from an extreme angle to the side of the screen. I didn’t notice as much of the sort of shadowy effect that can sometimes take hold when not looking at an LCD straight on.

As for appearance in bright light, it held up pretty well, with little glare or washed-out appearance. The screen resolution, especially when streaming Netflix content or other media, was best when the brightness was turned up to 100 percent. Most content tended to look more cool than vibrant, but this small screen offered more contrast and vibrancy than I expected.

Performance: Competent but not at the head of the class

I used CrXPRT, a benchmarking tool from Principled Technologies for Chromebooks, to gauge general performance with tasks like streaming video, playing movies, and even editing photos. I ran the Performance Test which yielded an overall result of 72.

Compared to other Samsung Chromebooks, the score wasn’t the lowest. The Samsung Chromebook XE303C12 takes that spot with a score of 32, and the highest performer is the Chromebook Pro 510C24-K01, at 130 points. (The better-performing Chromebooks scored by CrXPRT earned marks closer to 300).

I also ran the WebXPRT 3 test to capture how well this device performs basic web-based tasks. The score of 46 placed it above competing models like the HP Stream, which scored a 29 overall, but below the Dell Inspiron 11 3168, which scored a 51. By contrast, some of the highest performing laptops score near or over 250. The 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro was near the top of the table with a 246 overall score.

Productivity: An efficient multitasker

This small machine is very capable of performing multiple tasks at once. I could operate several browser tabs, stream both YouTube and Netflix content, and play a simple game like Pac-Man and Pocket World 3D without noticing any lags or interruptions.

It was efficient for working within the Google suite of tools like Google Docs and Gmail and web surfing as well. All of these basic functions are what a customer buying a device like this is looking for, and the Chromebook 3 delivers for daily computing and multimedia use.

As for anything more demanding like more intensive gaming, this little laptop falls short. I tried to play Asphalt 8 with little success. There were lengthy load times and lagging, and it froze up easily.

Audio: Plenty of volume and some dynamics

Audio quality isn’t terrible on the Samsung Chromebook 3. Videos and music reached high volumes and were quite clear, but the higher the volumes, the tinnier the sound became with a kind of echoey effect with dialogue.

Overall volume was louder with headphones than without them, and a little clearer too. But considering that the stereo speakers are located on the bottom of the device, I’d say the sound is not nearly as muffled as I’d expected it to be. For games, too, this sort of echoey and muffled sound quality came through, but it seemed better than when playing video content.

What’s Next for Black TikTokers

Black TikTok creators are reimagining life on the social media platform after the Trump administration cemented calls to ban the app amid security concerns regarding its potential connection to the Chinese government.

Described as tastemakers on the app, Black creatives are credited with starting many of the platform’s most enduring social trends, from dance crazes like the “Renegade” to popular sounds involving rapstress Nicki Minaj’s video commentary.

On Aug. 6, President Trump issued an Executive Order that will prohibit the popular social media app from operating in the United States by Sept. 15 if Chinese executives fail to make a deal with American buyers. The order targets TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance Ltd., with sanctions banning “any transaction by any person, or with respect to any property, subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, with ByteDance Ltd.”

This announcement came a week after President Trump’s initial threat of a ban caused a ruckus that reverberated across social media platforms.

“I didn’t understand, at first, why this would be happening,” TikTok creator Loren Montgomery told Lifewire over the phone. “To hear that it was going away in the midst of me getting bigger and bigger in my brand...I was upset.”

Better known by her username AuntieLoren, Montgomery made a name for herself on the app via her unique blend of rhythmic R&B tunes and comfort cuisine. Garnering an audience of over 320,000 followers, she has secured brand deals with Kroger and Home Shopping Network—illustrating the success some have found on the relatively young social media network.

The Reel Deal

With the platform’s looming suspension, these creators are forced to rethink their social media presence and how to convert TikTok renown into success on other platforms. After President Trump’s declaration, Instagram unleashed its Reels vertical that bears an uncannily similar look and feel to the Chinese app. Unveiled with all the business finesse the industry has come to expect from Facebook, Reels may be a facsimile, and creators like Montgomery say it pales in comparison to the original.

“I ramped up efforts to convert my followers over to my Instagram page after the announcement of the TikTok ban,” she said. “I don’t really deal with Reels that much. I’m trying to get adjusted to it in case TikTok does go away, but it feels like something that was rushed only as a substitute in case the ban ends up being successful—it just feels rushed.”

Reels is more than simply an attempt at copying the successful business model of TikTok, according to 29-year-old educator and politico George Lee. He worries that Facebook, the owner of Instagram, constantly tries to kill up-and-coming apps in an effort to monopolize the industry. He further explains the danger in the monopolization of social media, which may lead to an era where a single company exercises full control over what can and cannot be posted online.

“I just want to hear about the black rhythm, I don’t want to hear about the black blues.”

TikTok creators have long lobbied critiques against the app’s treatment of Black talent and Lee is among the loudest critics. Amassing over 750,000 followers across two profiles on the app, ConsciousLee and ConsciousLeeSpeaks, he has carved out a niche on TikTok as a pro-Black social justice advocate who describes his brand of engaging cultural commentary as edutainment—and he pulls no punches against the tech conglomerate.

“One of the tradeoffs with TikTok giving you so much exposure and accessibility to different markets and different parts of the world is that they have very arbitrary standards for policing their guidelines. I’ve been shadowbanned and suspended more on this app, over the past year, than I have on all other platforms combined.” Lee said.

Content Suppression

Shadowbanning is a tool used by social media platforms to curtail the community’s access to a certain creator through suppression of content without an outright ban or suspension of users.

It’s not just Lee, either. In the wake of the George Floyd protests and mass Black Lives Matter movement earlier this summer, Black creators took to Twitter and other platforms to express concerns that TikTok was repressing the scope of popular hashtags proliferating on the app, namely #BlackLivesMatter and #GeorgeFloyd. Lee thinks it is a challenging, albeit explicable, business move.

“If I am John Doe in the middle of Idaho, I don’t care about Black Lives Matter, I just want to see somebody dance. I just want to hear about the black rhythm, I don’t want to hear about the black blues,” Lee said. “So, the suppression of black creators is what happens when you’re trying to break into mainstream markets as an emerging platform.”

Best Overall: Amazon Kindle Fire HD 10

Amazon Fire HD 10 Review

When it comes to great tablets at an affordable price, the Amazon Fire HD 10 is one of the best bang-for-your-buck tablets out there. Coming in at under $200, the 10.1-inch 1080p Full HD display makes for a solid movie-watching experience. There are three available color choices, and two different storage options of 32 and 64GB, giving you a couple of different options to fit your needs. If you plan on using your tablet a lot, then the smaller storage sizes might prove to be problematic down the line.

The inclusion of 2GB of RAM, a 1.8GHz quad-core processor, and a total of 10-hours of battery life help make up for the less remarkable aspects of this tablet. You’ll also find a set of Dolby Atmos enabled speakers under the hood, alongside 802.11ac Wi-Fi speeds, making quick work of any streaming or downloads you might throw at it. Of course, the real shining star of of the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 10 is the built-in Alexa support, making it easy to interact with the tablet using only your voice.

Runner-Up, Best Overall: Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8

Amazon Fire HD 8 Review

If you don’t feel like splurging for the Fire HD 10, then the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8 is the next best option. With an 8-inch HD display, you’re going to find many of the same qualities from the HD 10 on show here, too. The 1.5GB of RAM might cause some issues in some apps, and the 1.3GHz processor isn’t all that fast, but it still boasts more than enough speed and screen real estate to make it worth your while, and even offers a better battery life than its bigger sibling with 12 hours per full charge.

Throw in the fact that the Kindle Fire series includes access to various Android applications alongside the Kindle books service itself, and the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8 is a great choice for those looking to get a solid tablet without going over $100. Like the Fire HD 10, the Fire HD 8 comes with both 32GB and 64GB storage options, which is more than enough room for take care of your various downloads, pictures, and apps.

Best for Reading Outside: Amazon Kindle Paperwhite

If you love the look of reading in physical books, or if you just plan on doing a lot of reading outside, then the Kindle Paperwhite is one you’re going to want to keep an eye on. Despite the fact that you won’t be able to download any other kind of applications, the Kindle Paperwhite offers a bright and crisp reading experience unparalleled on any other Kindle device that Amazon has to offer.

The 6-inch display might be a bit small for some readers who enjoy having more text on the page at any given time, but its bright screen and stark white background make it easier than ever to read digital text. You can pick up an 8GB or 32GB variant, giving you more than enough storage space to fill with online books, and it weighs less than 7 ounces, which means you don’t have to worry about carrying around a heavy tablet for those outdoor reading adventures.

Best for Reading at Night: Amazon Kindle Oasis

One of the best ways to read is at night when sitting in bed, or just chilling in your favorite spot in the house. That’s where the Amazon Kindle Oasis comes into play. With a bright 7-inch display, and 300 PPI, you’ll have plenty of screen real estate to fill with text from various books. It’s also waterproof, which means you won’t have to worry about it messing up if you spill a little tea on it while winding down for the night.

The Oasis also comes with full access to Audible, which includes thousands of audiobooks for you to get lost in. Like most Kindle tablets, the Oasis is designed to be lightweight and easy to hold for long periods of time, but the extended edge on the side makes it even easier to work with than others on our list. Best Budget: Amazon Kindle Fire 7

At just $49.99, the Amazon Kindle Fire 7 offers quite a lot for its price range. If you don’t have much experience with the Amazon ecosphere, or if you just want to pick up something cheap that gets the job done, then the Amazon Kindle Fire 7 is the perfect fit for your needs.

Sporting a 7-inch IPS display, the Amazon Kindle Fire 7 is more akin to the normal Kindles on this list than it is to the Fire HD 8 or Fire HD 10. You’ll also find that the included front-facing and rear-facing cameras work well enough, but they definitely aren’t the best you’ll find on a tablet right now. With up to eight hours of battery life, this package includes a lot for almost less than half of what you’d pay for a higher end Kindle, and it still does everything you could need it to do.
